"There are, in the world, brave men and women who lay down
their lives every day to protect the nation internally, and it is very apparent
that even these heroes suffer from sleep deprivation due to the taxing schedule
they are forced to follow. This schedule causes many physiological effects
along with psychological effects that influence how well and how effective they
are in the field. This paper focuses on
how sleep deprivation effects law enforcement physiologically and more
specifically psychologically. These effects
have long standing impacts on the person and carry over to the job daily. With the exhausting schedule of long shifts
and disruptive nights on call, some law enforcement never settle their sleep
debt. In reference to this knowledge,
there must be a way to combat these long standing effects of the job schedule,
to fix this, the paper will examine the possibility of different work schedules
and required sick or personal days to allow for the chance at recovering after
a long haul on the job. These solutions,
hopefully, can shed insight into a way to help these men and women do their job
in the most effective and healthy way without them leaving the job injured
physically or mentally due to a lack of sleep."

Another Blog on Chapter 5??
Hi Bloggers!
After finishing and re-reading chapter five from last week, and I still amazed how much sleep is cited in the bible. It really makes me think about how I view sleep. After writing the critical analysis I found myself very much convinced by Schmidt's argument over what sleep has done to society. That with the advent of clocks, and the change in perspective of time people, much like clocks become mechanical too. That they seemed to ritualize caffeine and reading to a point that is machine like. Also that their staying up all night was taking them away from God. We have discussed in class that God gave us the ability to sleep for a reason. It is a hard idea to grasp that sleep keeps us as Christians closer to God. I have gone back and forth with both chapter five and Schmidt's piece to really come to a solid conclusion to what I really think of the religious nature of sleep.

Sleepless!!!
Hi Bloggers,
I am exhausted! I did not go to sleep last night until about three in the morning. I went to dinner last night with my uncle and I had some coffee, not even thinking about the half life of it! I was wired all night, so I used this energy to get the rest of my Critique of a Scholarly Article paper done, and a good part of my research paper done. Though I accomplished a great deal in my sleepless state, I am defiantly feeling my sleep drive catching up to me! Hopefully I can get the research paper finished tonight and I can get to bed a normal hour and get some much needed sleep to make up for my ever growing sleep debt.

Chapter 5 Analysis
Hi Bloggers!
I really found this chapter interesting. It seemed less dense than the previous chapter and more comprehendible than the last. I never realized how many times sleep is referenced in the bible. Or even how sleep is involved in some of the most important events. For example in the creation of the first woman, how " the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon man...." (pg 57). Without this sleep there could have possibly not have been the creation of women, and where would our world be without them? Another example is when Abram, the founder of nations, was made this by the Lord (pg 57). I found an interesting correlation in the fact that it is always deep sleep that these events occur in, and in reference to what we have learned in class, deep sleep (stage 3 and 4) is said to be restorative sleep. That parallels to the bible in many ways. The multitude of events that occurred in this "deep sleep" are restorative acts. In the case of the Pharaoh, and his dream which lead to his interaction with Joseph. This interaction "save[d] his brethren" (pg 58). The conclusion of this chapter was so clarifying and inspiring to me. The three truths that are to be taken from the last scripture are so insightful. The first one stating that spiritual growth is uninterrupted in sleep. The second one stating that man is to experience spiritual growth in a state in which he or she is not concerned in their own affairs. The third one stating that during sleep the Lord opens the ears of humans to give instruction. These show that sleep serves a higher purpose than just to rest. We in sleep as stated in Schmitt's piece "are shaking hands with God". We are becoming better Christians.

Ready To Leave
Hi Bloggers!
My sleep lately has been great, I have been taking Nyquil every night for the last week, and I can sleep through the night now without waking up coughing! It is amazing how much better I feel just getting uninterrupted sleep. Even Wednesday night when I only received about four hours, I felt more rested because I didn't wake up then I did getting eight interrupted hours. I also noticed I am not near as hungry when I'm sleeping better, I guess all our knowledge about hormone levels due to sleep is really coming in handy. I am so ready to go home and sleep in my own bed after a huge feast!

Caffeine and the Coming of the Enlightenment
Hi Bloggers!
I really enjoyed this argument against Ekirch, and I agree more with it than the first article we read. I see the correlation and causation more in this. I also found this easier to read and less dense. His thesis statement was so clear and precise, that I found it easier to follow and therefore more interesting. His commentary of Ekirch's paper is interesting where he says in the thesis "As compelling and thorough as Ekirch's research is, I would Like to suggest that the history of modern sleep is not one of slow evolutionary change, but rather of an abrupt transformation... advances in lighting technology were a response to this change rather than a primary cause, Caffeine, books, a shift in the perception of time, and a concomitant shift in the valuation of sleep, created a demand for better nocturnal lighting"(135). This quote was so interesting, that sleep changed on the account of caffeine, which was used to suppress sleep in order to get more done. That caffeine demanded better lighting at night and changed the history of sleep forever. Also I thought the biblical ties throughout the piece were interesting. How the break between the two sleep was the "nighty resurrection" and the "first sleep" was compared to man before Christ, and the "second sleep" was compared to man after sleep. It is amazing to think about how faith based sleep was back then versus now. People don't near as much ponder the religious aspect of sleep. It was mentioned that sleep was "shaking hands with God" (130). I don't realize how much I take for granted just sleeping in terms of my faith. This piece really put many things in perspective for me.

It's Getting Hot in Hurr
Hi Bloggers!
I hope everyone is having a great week before break! The weather lately has been so great, I love the colder days. Except the wind, the wind is absolutely atrocious, there is not a day that I can get by without the wind destroying my hair. But other than that, I love the weather lately. Since it has gotten colder, the heater has been turned on in Owen, and it is so hot now. I have to sleep with all the fans on in the room and its still hot. This has made sleeping uncomfortable, but I have found a solution. I covered the vents in my room so the hot air wont come in as much above my bed. In more exciting news, I brought a Christmas tree from home and put it up! It makes the room seem more cheery and happy. The thought alone of seeing my family next week makes me so excited and sleep easier. Plus mock trial will be over tomorrow and I can breathe again afterwards! Hopefully my sleep will get better with my new advent and I can relax after mock trial!
